Languages

Welcome

The Modern languages department currently offers French to all pupils at all levels of ability. We have two full-time staff and one part time who all speak French.

All pupils learn a foreign language in year 7.  The same language is taught to the whole year group across the key stage.

The department has previously enjoyed trips to both France and Germany, which have proved very popular with pupils.

KS3 Information

Pupils this year are enjoying the new curriculum that we have developed as a department. They are learning how to speak and write about their family as well as their favorite programs, music and films. In addition to understanding French vocabulary and literacy,  pupils are developing their knowledge of French culture. We have included opportunities for pupils to practice translation and study French literature, both of which are important for the new GCSE.

We have a link with a school in Normandy and pupils in Year 8 are matched with a penfriend, who they will commune with over written letters. Additionally, we plan to establish a Skype link to be able to speak directly to the French pupils.

KS4 Information

Pupils thoroughly enjoyed the International Day of Languages delivered as an ACE day in Year 9 to help broaden their horizons in regards to languages. They participated in a variety of activities, such as: a French theater production, international cookery sessions and taster sessions in Greek and Mandarin Chinese.

Key stage 4 pupils have access to online resources both inside and outside of school to help compliment their learning and allow them to grasp key concepts of the french language. Pupils follow the AQA course and are assessed in 4 key areas: listening, reading, speaking and writing in terminal exams at the end of Y11, each element makes up 25% of the course.

Next Steps

Languages at A/AS level are offered at most of our local post-16 providers. Many employers view a qualification in Languages as proof of adaptability, flexibility and an open mind- all of which are pre-requisites in today’s ever changing employment market.
