Values and Ethos

A highly qualified and collaborative team of English specialists offer very high standards of teaching and learning. Our aim is to empower all students with the ability to use language effectively and to inspire in them a love and a passion for literature.

Our progressive two year KS3 curriculum offers a solid foundation for a rich and challenging three year programme for GCSE English and English Literature. Our aim is to promote learning and independence in a dynamic and engaging way that combines fun with high academic achievement. The skills of reading, writing and speaking and listening are of vital importance in many areas. They are not only essential in many careers but also underpin successful study of many subjects at all levels. To reflect this, our English lessons place pupils at the centre of learning to create independence and enable the development of skills in preparation for adult life.

We offer a range of exciting trips, clubs and competitions to further develop pupils’ enjoyment and passion for English. Touring theatre companies are regularly invited into school, a visit to Shakespeare’s Globe, a day in Whitby on the hunt for Dracula, are just a selection of events organised to further enrich pupils’ experience at both key stages. The school Library is at the heart of the department, actively promoting our passion for reading, playing an important part of pupils’ experience of English. The Library works closely with the English department to ensure everyone gets a chance to enjoy reading with buddy schemes such as Reading Allowed. We use the Accelerated Reader system to engage, challenge and improve all pupils’ reading. There is something for everyone in the Library; the newest teen fiction, picture books, comics, magazines, daily newspapers, board games to name but a few. Our full-time librarian ensures pupils are supported at all levels of their reading and encouraged to take part in competitions such as The Carnegie Book Awards, National Poetry Day, World Book Day and the BBC Radio 2 500 Word Short Story competition.

KS3 Information

The 2 year Key Stage 3 English curriculum is designed to enable pupils to experience a broad range of challenging and exciting texts, both fiction and non-fiction, in order to develop the skills and knowledge they will require to be successful at KS4 and beyond. Pupils are guided on a literary adventure that includes the Gothic, Shakespeare, modern prose and a selection of poetry through the ages. Our programmes of study allow pupils the best opportunities to express themselves with confidence and creativity and enhance and develop a passion for reading.

KS4 Year 9 and beyond

Pupils begin a 2 year English Literature GCSE in Year 9, studying an anthology of poetry, a modern drama text, a 19th century novel and Shakespeare, before sitting the GCSE exam at the end of Year 10. In Year 11 pupils study GCSE English Language, focusing on textual analysis, narrative writing as well as non-fiction texts and transactional writing components to prepare them for the GCSE exam at the end of Year 11. During the 3 year GCSE, pupils are supported by an extensive revision programme in preparation for their final exams.
