Welcome

Welcome to The Snaith School Science Department.

We aim to provide inclusive courses that will encourage pupils to be interested in science regardless of their ability and are continually striving to add to the learning opportunities we offer to our pupils.  Our GCSE examination results are excellent, being consistently above national targets, and we are always looking at ways to improve these further.  The department benefits from specialist teaching in Biology, Chemistry and Physics, meaning that pupils in KS4 have 3 teachers throughout their GCSE courses. We have 6 laboratories and one more general teaching room, as well as an outdoor learning area that allows pupils to investigate ecosystems.

Extra- curricular activities include visits to local Universities, STEM competitions and theatre visits.  Support is always available for pupils in the run up to examinations.  This can be on a one to one basis or in more formal revision sessions.

KS3 Information

All pupils follow a three year curriculum based on the Collins KS3 Science scheme.  This course combines Biology, Chemistry and Physics topics covering all the content included in the National Curriculum and aims to allow pupils to revisit and develop concepts through years 7 to 9.  Pupils are encouraged to make links between the science being delivered in the classroom and  ‘How Science Works’ in the world of work or how the ideas are applied in everyday life.

The Personal Learning and Thinking Skills are embedded into the schemes of learning and pupils are encouraged to assess their progress in these areas.

Practical activities form a large part of the learning experiences of the pupils and we are continually looking to develop our resources to allow pupils the best access to practical equipment.

KS4 Information

Our aim is to ensure that pupils in KS4 have the best choice of Science courses so that they are able to succeed and are well prepared to study a science based course post-16 should they wish.  We currently offer separate GCSEs in Biology, Chemistry and Physics for those pupils who are passionate about science and are prepared to spend 7 ½ per week studying it.  All other pupils have 5 lessons per week working towards GCSE Science B in year 10.  They then have a guided choice in year 11 between GCSE Additional Science , which leads onto AS levels in Biology, Chemistry and Physics or GCSE Additional Applied Science, which includes a greater percentage of coursework and can then be studied at AS level at local colleges.

Next Steps

All local colleges offer Science AS and A2 courses.  As well as Biology, Chemistry and Physics courses these include Applied Science courses.
