PE

Welcome

In a very busy and demanding environment, Physical Education is a popular and well liked subject on the school curriculum. Participation through all of the sports and activities covered is good, and the department programme of lunchtime and extra – curricular activities, well subscribed and eagerly attended.
There are 5 specialist Physical Education teachers, Mr. Simm, subject leader, Mrs Crook, the schools sport coordinator, Miss Montague, Mr Wilson and Mr. Franklin.
The facilities on site are very good. There is a four court community sports hall, a standard sized gymnasium, an all weather area that has 3 tennis and two netball courts, and extensive playing fields. There is a well established uniform for sport with students who follow an examination course having a badged track suit.
The ethos and philosophy of the department based on active participation and having a go.

KS3 Information

Students in Year 7 have 3 lessons. In years 8 and 9 they have 2. Students are taught in both single and mixed sex groupings. During this stage students have exposure to a wide range of sports including football, rugby (union and league), netball, hockey, basketball, volleyball, badminton, tennis, track and field athletics, cross country running, orienteering, rounders, softball, gymnastics, dance, aerobics, and  a 12 week session of swimming at a local swimming pool. Students are encouraged to develop not only skills, techniques and strategies, but to develop positive work attitudes and an understanding of having a healthy balanced lifestyle. A residential trip organised for year 7’s provides them with valuable outdoor and adventurous activities, building team worker skills as well as discovering how to cooperate in groups effectively.
Activities on a lunch time are either of an invitation club nature, or competitive inter form sport, involving as many sports possible throughout the year. Participation in these activities is encouraged as an extension of the form, but leading to participation in full school teams.

KS4 Information

Students in years 10 and 11 receive one compulsory lesson in PE during one week. In addition the department runs two examination courses, a GCSE Physical Education (OCR), and a certificate and Diploma in Btec Sport. Both courses are very popular and usually oversubscribed. GCSE students are formally assessed through practical work, coursework assignments and a formal examination, whilst the Btec are assessed through the modular assignments they have to produce, through both written tasks and practical assignments.
Examination courses will allow students to develop expertise in a range of sports familiar to them, whilst in standard PE lessons, the focus is very much on pupils selecting their own sport and developing and advancing their skills as much as they can.
This year a pilot course was introduced, the Junior Sports Leadership Course (level 1), in which students could follow a course designed to give them the experience of organising and leading a basic sports session. 25 students successfully passed this course.
KS4 students are actively encouraged to help with other aspects of sport and readily assist in refereeing , coaching and organising tournaments and events.
