Learning Support
Welcome
The Learning Support Department is a busy and successful department at Snaith School
The Special Education Needs Co-ordinator for the school is:
Karen Bramley, (English and SEN Specialist) Teaching Assistants: Michelle O’Sullivan, Shirley King, Louise Hall, Paula Price, Christine Howse, Stephanie Barraclough, Lindie Brinded, Morag Benson, Janette Hinchcliffe, Lorraine Johnson and Audrey Westaby.
KS3 Support Information
The function of the department is to support pupils in their learning by providing them with the means to access the curriculum. We aim to encourage pupils toward independent learning and encourage them towards this goal through carefully targeted support through the lower school. This support is available in many different forms, for example:
- TA can be located within a classroom to work with a selected group, or an individual pupil to support the teacher who will have provided differentiated tasks
- a small group of pupils, or an individual, may receive sessions during registration on one morning per week for a time-limited ‘booster’ programme
- a pupil may be withdrawn from a particular lesson for 'catch-up' work or to boost a skill such as spelling, reading comprehension or numeracy or for an intensive specialist support programme such as dyslexia or dyscalculia
- practical assistance can be provided when required
- Specialist courses such as Anger Management or Social Skills
If a pupil has a problem such as a sensory or physical disability, support can be adapted to suit the individual need e.g: Differentiating, enlarging worksheets orexa papers, photocopying onto coloured paper providing magnifying lens, specially adapted equipment, a laptop or coloured overlays providing ‘safe’ storage of equipment or special resources following a physiotherapy or speech therapy programme teaching one-handed keyboarding, memory or listening skills.
Booster Support - is available in the form of a term’s workshop sessions held during registration time from 8.55-9.15am. Pupils can follow programmes designed to boost basic literacy skills together with a reading pack which parents are asked to be involved with through the home/school reading partnership (if reading skills are to be developed).
KS4 Information
Students are not withdrawn from GCSE subjects as this could impact on the completion of courses so support is available as required during registration time (8.55-9.15 am) daily. Students who are allowed ‘Access Arrangements’ in examinations receive the same support in all test and exam practices as the arrangements are required to be part of normal practice.
Next Steps
Other support sessions that are available include handwriting, maths workshops, Reading Intervention to focus specifically ondeveloping reading fluency and comprehension skills. There is also lunchtime homework support room available each day from 12.30 to 1.30 pm where help is available for pupils in the organization and completion of tasks.
