History
Welcome
The History Department aims to enrich pupils' understanding of and engagement with the present through a deepened understanding of the past.
KS3 Information
Year 7 Curriculum
In Year 7 pupils study a combined course of Geography, History and aspects of Citizenship.
Year 8 Curriculum
In Year 8 pupils continue to develop their grasp of the subject by carrying out a range of structured investigations, each designed to explore a particular concept or enable pupils to use their skills of source analysis.
Year 9 Curriculum
The main aims of History in Year 9 are to provide pupils with an understanding of the world in which they live and to help them to develop important study and life-skills. Pupils begin Year 9 by focusing on the Native peoples of North America. They then spend the majority of the Year looking at different aspects of the 20thCentury. They will look, for example, at the causes of the First World War, life in the trenches, social and technological changes, different forms of government, the rise of the Nazi Party in Germany, the holocaust and the dropping of the atomic bombs.
KS4 Information
Year 10 Curriculum
Pupils spend the first part of the year studying Medicine Through Time. They address the key concepts of change/continuity and causation, produce a thorough set of notes to prepare them for Paper 1 in their final exam, and undertake an investigation of the information at the Thackray Medical Museum.
Year 11 Curriculum
Pupils spend the first part of Year 11 studying the American West between 1845 and 1890. This prepares them for paper 2 in the final exam. The course helps them understand the attitudes and beliefs of different groups of people from the period. These include the North American Indians, gold miners, migrants, homesteaders, lawmen, soldiers, cowboys and cattle-ranchers. Pupils explore the causes of migration, settlement and conflict on the Great Plains. A significant amount of time is spent developing skills of source analysis.
In the second part of the year pupils will be revising the medicine course and analysing change over a long period of time in preparation for paper 1.
