Health & Social Care
Welcome
Health and Social Care is a stand alone subject at GCSE and is a vocational course.
Over the last 6 years the subject has grown in popularity as a KS4 option and is now thriving with two teaching groups in both Years 10 and 11.
All students following this course have an interest in the caring professions and many have gone on to the local colleges to study the subject further. They are planning to take up careers such as teaching, childcare, psychology, social work and midwifery.
While delivering the work for assessment we also aim to foster the caring qualities in our students that are so important for work in this field.
KS4 Information
Currently we offer a Single or Double Award GCSE course. These courses have been well-subscribed in recent years.
In 2007 around 43% of the group achieved grades AA-CC
In 2008 around 90% of the group achieved grades AA-CC. A split grade (e.g. CB) is now awarded giving more flexibility for students.
In 2009 100% of the group achieved grades AA-CC.
Every effort is made to assist students in lessons, for homework and in after-school sessions when needed. In return, students are expected to work hard
The double award course is split into four units, two of these are exams and two are course work.
The units are;
- Health, Social care and Early years Provision (coursework): you look at one care setting e.g. hospital or nursery
- Understanding Personal Development and Relationships(Exam): Its about human growth and evelopment, different factors that occur and major life changes etc.
- Promoting Health and Welbeing (coursework): You look at a client and study their health, looking at ways of improving.
- Safeguarding and Protecting Individuals (Exam): the newest unit introduced in 2009.
The single award course includes just the first two units.
From September 2010 we are to deliver the new Diploma in Society, Health and Development at level 2 in place of the double award
