Food Technology

Welcome to Food Technology

This course builds on Food work from KS3 and is about the study of Food as a material for making and as a crucial element in a healthy lifestyle. These issues are looked at in terms of diet and health throughout life, the nutritional, physical, chemical and sensory properties of food in preparation, cooking and storage, food hygiene and safety. Students will plan and carry out their own investigations. You will need to be interested in research and analysing and evaluating information. Recent publicity has shown that there are huge problems to be faced in terms of Food and Health today. This course aims to raise further awareness of these issues, together with realistic ways of managing them in daily life.

KS3 Information
In Y7,8 and 9 students visit the Food area on a rotation system within Technology and spend approximately 18 -20 hours learning basic cooking skills and working with food. All our recipes can be made in one hour and are based on healthy eating guidelines. We aim to teach flexibility in food choice and recipe adaptation, so that cooking and eating well can also be fun.

KS4 Information

Currently we offer a Single Award GCSE course in Food and Nutrition. Food has always been a popular option, but we have made a change from the Food Technology GCSE taught over a number of years. We feel that the Food and Nutrition is more appropriate to students. It allows a more logical progression from KS3 to KS4 and offers scope for a wider range of practical work with more emphasis on making and much less on designing. Current Y10 and Y11 are enjoying this course.

Every effort is made to assist students in lessons, for homework and in after-school sessions when needed. In return, students are expected to work hard.

The assessment of this course is as follows:

Controlled assessment: 60%
Written examination:  40%

Coursework: 3 short tasks – These take place in Y10
1 Food Study task – This takes place in Y11

Exam: 1 hour 30 minutes paper in June of Y11

GCSE single award 1 grade A*-G
